Tailoring guide
Accountant resume keywords and example
Accounting postings use exact terms, and phrasing matters: a posting that says "month-end close" may not match a résumé that says "period-end closing procedures". They also name the ledger or ERP system you worked in. Below are the keywords that recur, a sample summary, skills grouped by type, and example bullets across seniority levels.

Accountant keywords that repeat in job postings
- GAAP
- Month-End Close
- Account Reconciliations
- General Ledger
- Journal Entries
- Accruals
- Financial Reporting
- Budgeting and Forecasting
- QuickBooks / NetSuite
Only include the ones that are true for you. A keyword you can't back up in an interview costs more than it gains.

Example resume bullets by seniority
Illustrative examples: the companies, numbers and outcomes are made up to show the structure (action, scope, tool, result). Use your own real figures.
Entry level
- Reconciled 30 bank and credit-card accounts monthly in QuickBooks, clearing unreconciled items within 5 business days of close.
- Prepared journal entries and accrual schedules for a $15M company and supported the external audit with requested workpapers.
Mid level
- Owned the month-end close for 3 entities in NetSuite, reducing the close cycle from 8 business days to 5 by automating recurring accruals.
- Built a variance-analysis template in Excel that flagged balances over 10% off budget, giving department heads their numbers 2 days earlier.
Senior
- Led a team of 4 accountants through a migration from QuickBooks to NetSuite, closing the first quarter on the new system without audit adjustments.
- Designed the reconciliation review checklist used across 5 entities and presented quarterly results to the CFO.
Gaps candidates miss most
- The accounting system by name (NetSuite, QuickBooks, SAP) rather than "accounting software"
- The size of the books: entities, accounts reconciled, revenue or transaction volume
- A measurable improvement, such as days off the close or fewer audit adjustments
Common accountant resume mistakes
- "Prepared financial statements" with no entity size, system or timeline.
- Using your old employer's wording instead of the posting's exact terms.
- Leaving out Excel skills when postings name pivot tables and lookups.
- Listing a certification you don't hold, or hiding one you do.
- Describing duties without a result a hiring manager can picture.
